Get a Pass

To use any Colorado Express Lanes, you will need an ExpressToll account and pass to avoid a higher toll. The Switchable HOV Transponder is the only pass that allows you to choose the HOV3+ option.

Why get an ExpressToll pass?

ExpressToll sticker passes and Switchable HOV3+ Transponders work on all Express Lanes, along with E-470 and the Northwest Parkway. Overhead signs display current toll prices, and rates will depend on the time of day. By getting a transponder or ExpressToll pass, drivers can save an average of 40% on tolls.

If you choose not to use a pass, you will be billed through a License Plate Toll. A bill will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, and you will pay a higher rate based on how far you travel in the Express Lane.

What is the difference between an ExpressToll Sticker Pass and a Switchable HOV3+ Transponder?

ExpressToll sticker passes and Switchable HOV3+ Transponders both work on all Express Lanes.

ExpressToll Sticker Passes are stickers that drivers should place on the inside of their vehicles. These passes allow drivers to be billed through their ExpressToll account.

Switchable HOV3+ Transponders are physical switches that say HOV or Toll and should be attached to your windshield, below your rear-view mirror. These transponders are the only pass that allows you to choose the HOV3+ option and use the lanes for free where HOV3+ is available and you have three or more people in your vehicle. Visit the Using the Express Lanes webpage for more information on which Express Lane corridors offer HOV3+.

Whenever a vehicle that has either an ExpressToll sticker pass or a Switchable HOV3+ transponder in Toll mode drives through tolling points on CDOT's Express Lanes or other Colorado toll roads, the appropriate toll amount is automatically deducted from the vehicle owner's account.

If you choose not to use a sticker or switchable transponder, you will be billed through a License Plate Toll at a higher rate.

How to get an ExpressToll Sticker Pass

An ExpressToll Account is needed to purchase both the ExpressToll sticker pass and the Switchable HOV3+ Transponder.

Drivers prepay $35 in tolls to set up an account. All of these funds can be used for future tolls, and drivers are mailed an ExpressToll sticker transponder to place inside their vehicle for easy use.

How to get a Switchable HOV3+ Transponder

An ExpressToll Account is needed to purchase both the ExpressToll sticker pass and the Switchable HOV3+ Transponder. The Switchable HOV3+ Transponder is the only pass that allows you to choose the HOV3+ option and use the lanes for free where HOV3+ is available.

The Switchable HOV3+ Transponder costs $18, which includes shipping costs.

If you are setting up your ExpressToll Account and purchasing the Switchable Transponder at the same time, the $18 is deducted from the $35 in pre-paid tolls that is required to set up a new ExpressToll account, leaving a balance of $17 to be used on tolls.

If you already have an ExpressToll account and want to purchase a Switchable HOV3+ Transponder, the $18 will be charged to your current account.

People who plan to travel with three or more people in their vehicle (HOV purists) can get a transponder for free but cannot use the switchable transponder in toll mode or travel in Express Lanes that do not have an HOV3+ option (C-470 and the I-70 Mountain Corridor.)
