US 6 Clifton Improvements Project Begins

Travel Advisory

November 28, 2022 - Northwestern Colorado - Public information session will take place Wednesday in community located between Grand Junction and Palisade

Mesa County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor United Companies have begun a highway improvement project on US Highway 6. The project will take place in Clifton on US 6 (F Road) from just west of the I-70B intersection to just east of 5th St and Clifton Elementary School. The project will improve safety by realigning and updating traffic patterns on US 6, adding two roundabouts and center medians and an additional eastbound travel lane. Pedestrian and bicycle connections through the corridor will also be improved. The project is part of CDOT’s 10-year plan improvements for the US 6 corridor in Mesa County.

Once complete, the project will improve the drivability for motorists on this busy stretch of highway in Mesa County. The pedestrian improvements will make for a safer route for the almost 400 children that attend Clifton Elementary School which is directly impacted by the project zone. Traffic control is designed to keep drivers moving through the corridor in two lanes during project construction and business access will remain open. There may be times when motorists will need to utilize local streets to connect to the post office and businesses in the project work zone. The project is anticipated to be complete in the fall of 2024.

The public is invited to attend an in-person public information session on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The public information session will take place from 4-6 p.m. at the Clifton Community Hall, 126 2nd St, Clifton, CO 81520. Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet with project team members to learn more about the project improvements and construction phasing. Open house information will also be posted on the project website for those unable to attend the public information session.

This project is the third of three CDOT roadway improvement projects along the US 6 corridor in Mesa County during the 2022 construction season. The other two projects are the US 6 North Avenue Resurfacing project, which is close to completion, and the resurfacing project on US 6 & CO 141 that was completed in May 2022.

Traffic Impacts

  • Motorists should expect 10 minutes additional travel time on US 6 for both eastbound and westbound traffic in Clifton.
  • Short duration side street access closures to US 6 within the project work zone.
