Winter shutdown for new I-70 median cable rail and guardrail project in Eagle County

Travel Advisory

December 19, 2022 - Northwestern Colorado - The planned winter shutdown is necessary to keep the traveling public and project team safe during winter weather conditions

Eagle County — A planned winter shutdown is now in place for the cable and guardrail installation project on Interstate 70 just west of Edwards and east of Vail. The planned winter shutdown is necessary to keep the traveling public and project team safe during winter weather conditions. Snowfall and weather are the only limitations for completing the project this year. The Edwards project location is mostly finished, with seeding and effective grading to take place when crews return after the shutdown. Heavy snow prevented those tasks from being completed this month.

During the 2022 construction season, crews completed the installation of new median cable barrier at the Vail location from Mile Points 182-183. Crews also completed installation of one mile of new guardrail in the Edwards location from MP 159-160. Safety will be improved by adding guard rail and cable barrier in these new locations. The cable acts as a buffer to prevent the most dangerous types of motor accidents. It prevents a vehicle from crossing the center median into the opposing lane of traffic.

Project Schedule for 2023

Work will resume in the spring of 2023. Crews will complete remaining environmental seeding and median grading in the Vail area. Completion date is anticipated mid-April 2023, weather dependent.
