Mt. Evans Highway Closing This Week

October 1, 2013 - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is closing the lower portion of the Mount Evans Highway (State Highway 5) – between Echo Lake and Summit Lake – for the season at 8 a.m. on Thursday, October 3.

A forecast of inclement weather and the federal government shutdown lead to the decision to close the bottom segment.  The U.S. Forest Service maintains a fee collection booth on SH 5 and the federal shutdown will not allow the booth to be manned.  Forest Service crews currently are winterizing their facilities.

CDOT closed the five-mile segment from Summit Lake to the top of Mount Evans (14,264 feet) the day after Labor Day, per agreement with the USFS.

The highway is scheduled to reopen on Friday, May 23, 2014, weather permitting.
