Bridge Improvement Project Begins in Colorado Springs

March 5, 2013 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - Colorado Springs - A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project upgrading numerous bridges on Interstate 25 and U.S. 24 is underway.

Work hours are 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.  Single and double lane closures, traffic slowing, and a 45 mph speed limit should be expected.

The improvements consist of removing and replacing the expansion joints on these structures, in the following order:

  • Southbound I-25 Over Pine Creek (north of Woodmen Road)
  • Southbound I-25 Over Cottonwood Creek (south of Woodmen Road)
  • Southbound I-25 Over Fontanero Street
  • Southbound I-25 Over Uintah Street
  • Northbound I-25 Over Uintah Street
  • Northbound I-25 Over Fontanero Street

The project moves to U.S. 24 when work is completed on I-25.  Both eastbound and westbound structures will be upgraded, with the sequence to be determined at a later date:

  • U.S. 24 over Union Pacific Railroad
  • U.S. 24 over Hancock Expressway
  • U.S. 24 over Union Boulevard
  • U.S. 24 over Circle Drive
  • U.S. 24 over Fountain Creek

"Since expansion joints allow the bridges to expand and contract, and avoid structural damage, it's vital that the joints are replaced periodically to extend the life of all these structures," said CDOT Project Engineer Shane Ferguson.  "Due to the amount of traffic that travels both highways, it's an excellent way to keep our bridges in good shape and functioning."

The project is scheduled for completion in September 2013.
