Work Begins Today on Signal Replacement and Upgrades at 6th & Laurel in Glenwood Springs

January 3, 2013 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor TK Construction, LLC, began work today on a project to replace the span-wire signals at 6th Street (US 6) and Laurel Street (SH 82 to the south) in Glenwood Springs.

The project involves the installation of four new traffic signal poles, one pedestrian signal pole, six mast arms (horizontal supports for signal heads), new pedestrian signal heads and a new controller cabinet.

“The existing span wire signal is in critical need of replacement and has been hit several times,” CDOT project engineer Bill Crawford said. “We are currently using temporary signal heads to keep it running. Incidentally, the new mast-arm signal will also look much nicer.”

Crews will work today and tomorrow; then, weather permitting, approximately two weeks longer to finish up this season by January 18. The work will consist of drilling for conduit placement and boring holes and constructing the pole and controller cabinet foundations. Next spring, likely March, crews will finish work by installing the poles, mast arms and signal heads.

The work was contracted to TK Construction for $257,000.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS: Motorists should anticipate periodic lane closures in all directions, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No major delays in traffic flow are expected.
