Road Improvement Project Begins on Highway 86

June 3, 2011 - ELBERT COUNTY – Work is underway to upgrade the road surface and improve the bridges on State Highway 86, between Kiowa and the Station Creek Bridge, 10 miles east of Kiowa.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project includes rotomilling and asphalt paving, bridge deck repairs, and guardrail and pipe replacement.

Flaggers are alternating eastbound and westbound traffic through the work zone and stopping vehicles up to 10 minutes, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Some work will be scheduled on Saturdays, as necessary.  The speed limit also will be reduced to 40 mph and vehicles wider than 12 feet will not be allowed to travel through the area during project hours.

“New asphalt will provide the traveling public with a smoother road surface that’ll last at least ten years,” says CDOT Project Engineer Scott Kimble.  “We’re also improving  and extending the life of the bridges at Comanche, West Bijou and Station creeks by removing the existing surface and placing new concrete down where the decks have deteriorated, as well as waterproofing the structures and installing new guardrails.”

The $3.8 million project, contracted to APC Construction Co., of Golden, CO, is scheduled for completion in August 2011.
