New and innovative project ideas that can affect a real behavioral change are encouraged in any of the areas below.


Law Enforcement

The Police Traffic Services emphasis area funds only law enforcement agencies to conduct enforcement and education efforts regarding speed, distracted driving and seat belt/child passenger safety compliance. Law enforcement agencies are encouraged to submit one combined application that encompasses any or all of these efforts.

Please Note: Applications for impaired driving enforcement and pedestrian and bicycle safety/enforcement must be submitted, separately, under the respective emphasis area. They cannot be combined under police traffic services.

The pedestrian and bicycle safety emphasis area funds only law enforcement agencies to conduct enforcement and education efforts regarding pedestrian and bicycle safety.


General Traffic Safety

The Community Traffic Safety emphasis area funds efforts through a combination of program areas and focuses on a local area such as a city or county, or possibly a region or Statewide level. Projects concentrate on reducing serious injury traffic crashes and fatalities through education and awareness efforts in young driver safety (can include GDL education and awareness, distracted driving prevention and seat belt compliance), child passenger safety, seat belt usage, older driver safety, impaired driving prevention and distracted driving prevention.

This is usually enacted through a coalition of safety-oriented agencies such as local health departments, schools, hospitals and non-profit agencies. Applicants are encouraged to submit one grant application if their program encompass several program areas and projects.

The Impaired Driving emphasis area funds projects that seek to reduce the increasing rate of impaired driving related serious injury traffic crashes and fatalities. Funds can be used to support educational and awareness efforts related specifically to substance abuse and impaired driving prevention.

Apply under this program area if impaired driving prevention is the sole focus of your grant application.

The Motorcycle Safety emphasis area funds projects that seek to reduce the increasing rate of serious motorcycle injury crashes and fatalities. Projects can support educational and awareness efforts related to motorcycle safety, proper safety gear and training.

Apply under this program area if motorcycle safety is the sole focus of your grant application.

The Occupant Protection emphasis area funds efforts related to child passenger safety (CPS) projects that seek to reduce serious injury traffic crashes and fatalities among Colorado’s youngest motor vehicle passengers. Funds can be used for car and booster seat fitting and inspection stations and educational efforts. This is typically done through partnerships with local health departments, law enforcement, schools, hospitals and non-profits. The Occupant Protection emphasis area also funds efforts related to seat belt usage education, outreach and awareness.

Apply under this program area if CPS and/or seat belt usage is the sole focus of your grant application.

The Older Driver emphasis area funds projects that seek to reduce older drivers involved in serious injury traffic crashes and fatalities. Projects can support educational and awareness efforts related to older driver safety including car fit stations and educational outreach efforts.

Apply under this program area if older driver safety is the sole focus of your grant application.

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety emphasis area funds projects that seek to reduce bicycle and pedestrian injuries and fatalities by encouraging safe bicycling and walking behaviors and increase driver awareness. Bicycling and walking are critical components of transportations system, and keeping cyclists and pedestrians safe is a priority.
